How to use Secondhand Tack Online

Welcome to Secondhand Tack Online – the online marketplace for used saddles, tack and equestrian equipment. Use Secondhand Tack Online to advertise your surplus equestrian equipment and to source used items of tack for your horse, clothing for you and equipment for the yard. The site is designed to be easy to use – listing an item takes just minutes.

You do not need to register to browse the site. There are three search options (found on the left hand side of the screen):

  • Search by category – use the category and sub–category search boxes or click “Browse” to see the full list of categories.

  • Use keywords in the quick search box.

  • Browse by city to view items in your area – or by price.

Once you have found an item you are interested in you can contact the seller directly. Sellers contact details will appear alongside their advert.

The seller will display which methods of payment they will accept.

Postage and shipping

The seller will display which type of shipping is available i.e: collection only, seller to post or either. The seller will identify whether the price of the item includes postage. Ensure that buyer and seller are clear on who is paying the postage before the transaction is made.

You will need to register before you place an advert. This only takes a moment.

You will be asked to set up a password when registering. If you have forgotten your password click “forgotten password” button on the “sign in” page. You will also be asked for a landline number and address. These are for verification purposes and will not show on your advert.

Listing your item

  • Listing title - this is the heading for your advert e.g. “Albion SLK” or “absolute bargain”.

  • Category – Select the main category for your item e.g. “rugs” or “saddles”.

  • Sub Category – Select the sub–category if applicable e.g. “outdoor” or “dressage”.

  • Description – add all the details of your item here. Make sure you add enough detail. For example when listing a saddle some of the details you should include are, seat size, width, colour, any suede areas, strapping arrangement, flocked or memory foam, deep or shallow seat, square or round cantle. All the information found here will be available to the search engine. Therefore, the more detail you include here the more easily found your item will be. The first 200 characters will appear in the initial listing.

  • Brand – Make sure to mention the brand if there is one.

  • Price – give your asking price here.

  • Photographs - You have the option of adding a maximum of three photographs of your item for a small fee of just having one photo for free. Put items on a contrasting background and take clear pictures from different perspectives.

  • Postage – weigh your item and find out what it will cost you to post. If you have included the postage in the price mention that it is included. Ensure that it is clear between the buyer and the seller who is expected to pay the postage and how much it will be.

Buying advice

We recommend that before you release funds, you are satisfied that the item is as listed and that you have verified your sellers identity. To gain as much information about your seller as possible we recommend the following:

  • You may know them if they are local. If they say that they were national dressage champion or that they work at a particular yard, check it out!

  • If they have a website, view it.

  • Obtain a landline number. Speak to them on the phone.

  • Communicate by email and have your seller commit to sending the item on receipt of payment.

Unfortunately, we are unable to interfere in the private transaction between buyer and seller. Neither are we able to offer legal advice. Secondhand Tack Online does not guarantee that the above will successfully verify the seller but hopes these measures will help to reduce fraud. If a letter of complaint is received and upheld by us we will remove the seller from our system.

Be careful when meeting sellers at their home. For personal ease and safety take someone with you.

Purchase of supplements

Supplements that have been opened or the seal has been broken should not be advertised on the site. Secondhand Tack Online advises that opened supplements should not be purchased.

Infection or disease

Conditions such as ringworm can be contracted through the use of equipment. It is good practice to treat second-hand goods with an anti-fungal treatment such as Virkon before using them on your horse.

Selling advice

We recommend that you have cleared funds from the buyer before you release any goods. Some buyers may be reluctant to do this so make attempts to verify your identity and send them a guarantee that you will send the goods on clearance of funds.

Sale of Goods Legislation 1979 (as amended)

The Act provides that wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means that items sold by business sellers must be:

  • of "satisfactory quality";

  • "as described"; and

  • "fit for purpose".

Therefore, goods sold by a business must not be inherently faulty at the time of sale, must match any description given to them and, allowing for factors like price, they must be fit for their purpose, defect free, safe and durable.
Where the seller is a private individual, the goods must be "as described". The goods are not legally required to be of "satisfactory quality" or "fit for purpose".
The Sale of Goods Act applies to both new and used items. Sellers of second hand goods are under obligation to ensure that the goods are "as described".
When a business seller is selling an item to a consumer, any loss and damage to the goods that occur in transit are at the seller’s risk. Therefore, in these cases, a buyer should not have to pay for postal insurance.
Be careful when meeting buyers at home. For personal ease and safety, take someone with you or meet in a public place.

Stolen goods

In the rare case when you suspect stolen goods are being advertised on Secondhand Tack Online please contact us as well as your local police authority. We will co-operate fully with police and hand over full details of any suspect.
